How to become CILEx regulated
CILEx, The Chartered Institute of Legal Executives is a professional organisation that represents legal professionals, including those who specialise in conveyancing in England and Wales. It has a membership of around 20,000 Chartered Legal Executive lawyers, paralegals and other legal practitioners and is the only body that independently regulates these.
If you operate in Northern Ireland or Scotland, other professional organisations in these countries can represent you, including The Law Society of Northern Ireland (LSNI) and The Law Society of Scotland (LSS).
What courses do I have to do?
To become CILEx accredited, you must complete two courses:
- CILEx Level 3 Professional Diploma in Law and Practice
- CILEx Level 6 Diploma in Law and Practice
Can I become a solicitor through CILEx?
CILEx members will have the opportunity to become solicitors typically within one to two years of qualifying. You’ll need to complete the graduate fast-track diploma and then have three years of relevant employment experience.
Is CILEx a degree?
No, CILEx differs from other regulatory bodies as it’s a non-university route to qualify as a lawyer. It also provides a Tech Level designed for 16-18 year olds, apprenticeships and a Graduate Fast-track route offering affordable alternatives to the Legal Practice Course (LPC).
How much does it cost?
The CILEx qualification is significantly cheaper than going via the Legal Practice Course (LPC) route. The cost of the graduate diploma will be between £1,800 and £2,200, which is much more affordable than the £12,000 for the LPC.
