Nearly Half of Brits Preferred to Stay in The City in 2023

Compare My Move data has found that in 2023, 47.7% of all movers within England’s largest cities prefer to stay within the city rather than move away. Sheffield saw the highest mover retention rate with 53.8% of residents deciding to stay in Sheffield when moving, while Manchester saw the least retention, only holding on to 31.8% of Manchester movers.

Below we have a list of the cities that have a population above 300,00 and the percentage of movers that moved somewhere else in the city

The 5 cities that top the table and have retained the highest percentage of movers all have a population of over half a million, with the largest population, London, coming in second with a mover retention rate of over 50%. On the other hand, cities with a lower population have a smaller mover retention rate.

There are of course some standouts on either end. Although Swansea has the lowest population on the list, just over 300,000, the city has the 6th highest mover retention rate. Birmingham is the city with the second highest population in the UK, yet is the 7th worst city on the list at retaining its movers.

Moving Within a City

Moving within a large city can be a lot different from moving elsewhere in the country. The main differences when it comes to moving within a city are the property size and the distance travelled. The Statistical Digest of Rural England finds that there is a much lower proportion of detached properties in urban areas than in rural areas (16% versus 49%) and a much higher proportion of flats in urban areas compared to rural areas (26% versus 7%).

Flats are, on average, 91m² smaller than detached houses and therefore reduce the average size of properties in cities considerably. Because of this, the average regional property size for London is the lowest in the UK at 84m², which is due to London having a massive population compared to its size.

Benefits of Moving Within a City

It’s very likely that the smaller your property is the cheaper your move will be. The cost of house removals will be driven by two main factors, the amount of stuff you have to move and the distance you need to move it. Therefore, moving a 1-bed flat 15 miles across a city will be around 60% cheaper than moving a 3-bed house 50 miles to a new county or town.

As well as that, you’ll need less manpower to move a smaller property, you can then employ a man and van service which will specialise in small moves. Because a man and van service will, on average, have a smaller operation than a removals service, likely being cheaper to employ.
