The 45th President of the United States was all over everyone's minds in 2023, with 16 European countries searching for him more than any other celebrity. These countries included:
Donald Trump was a key figure in the 2023 news, for better or for worse, as he announced his candidacy for the 2024 presidential elections in late 2022, and hasn’t been far from the front page news since.
His biggest moment of 2023, although maybe not his proudest one was his indictment by the federal government and the state of Georgia separately in August. This was due to numerous fraud and criminal conspiratory charges committed during the 2020 election in an attempt to overturn the result of the election in which Trump lost to the current U.S. president, Joe Biden.
Miley Cyrus was the most-searched celebrity in 14 countries over the past year, coming in just behind Donald Trump. Miley Cyrus saw a majority of Eastern Europe searching for her in 2023, coming up at the top of the search terms for these countries:
The biggest reason Miley Cyrus was on people's minds in 2023 was because of the biggest single of the singer's career, ‘Flowers’. The hit was released very early in the year in mid-January and has been ranked as the most streamed song in 2023 on Spotify.
The song amassed a massive 1.6 billion plays across the world in 2023 and won the NMA for the best song internationally and the best music video internationally. This is apparent in the amount the artist was searched for in 2023 by European countries.
Eva Mendes is a celebrity, former actor, and businesswoman who is known nowadays for having a very ‘private life’, not acting in a movie since 2014 and her latest acting endeavour being a guest spot on the kids show Bluey in 2021. However, this didn’t stop her from being the most searched celebrity in 3 countries this year:
Although they prefer to keep their relationship as private as possible, Mendes’ husband, Ryan Gosling co-starred in the hit movie ‘Barbie’ in 2023 which sparked a lot of interest from the press. Eva Mendes was very supportive across Instagram of the movie and was constantly sharing posts about the film.
In an interview in the summer of 2023, Mendes admitted that she won’t be looking to get back into the limelight anytime soon, and didn’t join her husband on the red carpet, but instead spends her time looking after their kids.
Although Trump, Cyrus, and Mendes took the top spots, they weren’t the only celebrities that were popular around Europe in 2023. Here are the most searched celebrities from every other country, and a bit about the ones that stand out to us.

The Hollywood Walk of Fame star Gina Lollobrigida was the most searched celebrity in Italy over the past year, likely due to her passing in January 2023. Lollobrigida was one of the biggest Italian stars that has ever graced Hollywood and is known for movies such as Solomon and Sheba (1959), The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1956), and Come September (1961). Lollobrigida passed aged 95 in Rome and was searched for more than anyone in Italy, to enjoy her movies and look back on her life.
Dominic Thiem is one of the only athletes on this list, alongside David Beckham who likely gained his search status in Iceland due to his 2023 documentary, ‘Beckham’. Thiem is an Austrian tennis player who, in 2021, was plagued by a wrist injury that put him out of the game and off of his form for years. However, on the 28th of August 2023, in the US Open, the Austrian managed to win his first Grand Slam victory since his injury, beating Alexander Bublik, and likely being the cause of many Austrians searching for his name in 2023.
Doda, one of the most successful Polish singers was all over people's minds in Poland this year. The two-time MTV Europe Music Award winner had a reality TV show released by Polsat on her music career and personal life, as well as had a number-one single with rapper Smolasty called Zanim zajdzie słońce. Being such a prominent part of Polish media in the last year, there’s no wonder Doda was the most searched-for celebrity in Poland in 2023.
