Which Shipping Option Do You Need?

It’s important to hire your international removals service well in advance of your move to Bulgaria. This is to ensure your personal effects arrive on time and aren’t as affected by potential delays.

Shipping furniture overseas is quite costly. This is why it’s important to choose the best shipping option for your budget, and also your moving schedule.

Due to Brexit, the cost of moving belongings to Bulgaria, and the processes involved have changed slightly. There are extra steps involved to consider, such as additional documentation and charges.

The main shipping options from the United Kingdom are:

  • Shipping freight
  • Road freight
  • Part-load
  • Air freight

One or more of these services can be used depending on your preferences and budget.

Shipping Freight

Shipping freight is a great, cost-effective shipping option to choose from. While Bulgaria is located in the Black Sea which is almost landlocked, cargo ships can still pass through to deliver goods.

Due to the location of Bulgaria and the current Russian war with Ukraine, shipping freights have been delayed. This is important to keep in mind if you need to receive your goods by a specific date. On average, shipping times will take between 2-4 weeks to arrive, with some services taking up to 6 weeks.

There are 7 major ports in Bulgaria, with the Port of Varna being the largest option. Other ports Include:

  • Port of Balchik
  • Port of Sofia
  • Port of Burgas
  • Port of Kavarna

If you need to ship the contents of your entire home, shipping freight is the best option. This is because the costs are based on the size of the container you choose, rather than the weight of the items. You have the option of selecting a 20ft or a 40ft container. Shipping freight allows you to ship vehicles overseas.

Road Freight

Road freight is a useful option for shipping from the UK to Bulgaria. International movers need to have Goods in Transit insurance, along with Public Liability. While they are careful when transporting goods, this adds an extra layer of security.

It will take between 3-7 days on average for road freight to arrive, depending on whether you have chosen express delivery. This will typically be a door-to-door service. Given the distance of Bulgaria from the UK, sometimes other shipping is used alongside a removals van, such as the Eurotunnel and ferries.

Road freight is quick and cost-effective, making it a great option for those looking to move internationally on a budget. The removals team will help determine what size van you’ll need for your goods.

Part-Load

Part-load services are useful for those looking to ship a small number of goods. You will share a shipping container with other people. This allows you to only pay for the amount of space you need, helping to lower final shipping costs.

As goods will need to be delivered to different locations, and transit times are longer, you will need to factor this into your shipping plans. Part-load shipping tends to be less frequent compared to full-container shipping.

Between 7-10 days is the average time it will take for part-load shipped goods to arrive. This is by road freight. Other method times will vary.

Air Freight

Air freight is the quickest way you can receive your household goods. On average, this option takes around 2-3 days. There are 5 international airports in Bulgaria to choose from, with Sofia Airport being the main option. Other airports include:

  • Burgas Airport
  • Varna Airport
  • Plovdiv International Airport
  • Gorna Oryahovitsa Airport

If you need your belongings to arrive quickly, air freight is the best shipping option to consider. However, if you need to transport a lot of items, it can cause limitations. Air freight costs are measured by weight, and heavier items cannot be transported this way.

  • Proof of sufficient funds
