Which Shipping Option Do You Need?

When moving to Hungary, it’s important to arrange your shipping in advance to ensure that your goods arrive on time. Shipping furniture overseas can be tricky depending on how much space you need and what you are moving. This means that you need to choose an appropriate mode of transport.

Following the UK’s exit from the EU, there are extra regulations that you need to keep in mind when moving to other European countries. You can choose from the following:

  • Shipping freight
  • Road freight
  • Part-load
  • Air freight

You can use one mode of transport or a combination, depending on your needs and requirements.

Shipping Freight

Shipping freight is a popular mode of transport that is suitable for any move. Taking up to 7 days on average, it is also efficient thanks to the 6 international ports to choose from. The main port is the Port of Budapest, also known as the Csepel Freeport. Other ports include:

  • Port of Dunaújváros
  • Port of Baja
  • Győr-Gönyű Port
  • Port of Komarom
  • Port of Nyergesújfalu

There are various shipping container sizes to choose from, making it cost-effective and ideal for larger moves. This means that you are only paying for the space you need.

There is a chance of delays with shipping freight as there are extra restrictions at the borders due to Brexit. This can prolong the move, meaning that arranging shipment in advance is paramount.

Road Freight

Road freight is a popular choice when moving to Hungary as it takes up to 5 days on average. This makes it one of the fastest modes of transport. With various vehicle sizes to choose from, you can be assured that your goods will accommodate an appropriate amount of space.

It is one of the most cost-effective modes of transport, making it suited for most budgets. Road freight can also be accommodated for any move. This means that whether you are moving large and heavy furniture or fragile and valuable items, you can do so.

However, it’s important to bear in mind that your goods will be shipped across multiple countries along the way. This means that there is a higher chance of delays at border controls due to extra restrictions put in place following Brexit.

Part-Load

Part-load can take up to 3 weeks to arrive in Hungary from the UK. You will be assigned a portion of a container in your chosen mode of transport. Other customers will own portions of the remaining space in the container which will then make its way to its various destinations.

It is the best choice for smaller moves and those looking to move on a strict budget as it is also the cheapest shipping option.

Part-load is the slowest choice as your mode of transport may make stops along the way depending on where the other goods are being shipped. This can prolong the shipping time and increase the chance of delays.

Air Freight

Air freight is the most convenient option, taking approximately 1 day for goods to arrive. There are 6 international airports in Hungary. The main airports are Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport and Debrecen International Airport. They are also the largest in the country. The other airports are:

  • Hévíz-Balaton Airport
  • Győr-Pér International Airport
  • Pécs-Pogány International Airport
  • Budaors Airport (this is now used for aviation training)

It is ideal for smaller moves and items that aren’t too heavy. It is also great for those embarking on a last-minute move who need their goods as soon as possible.

The downside to air freight is that there are weight limitations that the plane will be able to handle. This makes it an unsuitable option for those wanting to move items of furniture.

Air freight is also the most expensive shipping option as it is calculated by weight. This means that those working with a strict budget may need help to cover the cost.
