Which Shipping Option Do You Need?

After setting a moving date, you’ll need to arrange how best to get your goods shipped to Qatar. Shipping furniture overseas can be costly and time-consuming, so you need to know how much you’re moving and how quickly you need it moved.

Being based on a peninsula on the Persian Gulf, you have the following options when picking the mode of transport for your removals:

  • Shipping Freight
  • Part-Load
  • Air Freight

Feel free to use one mode or a combination of transport types to suit your inventory.

Shipping Freight

Shipping freight is the most affordable and favoured transport option available when moving to Qatar. It's also popular due to the different sizes of shipping containers you can choose. This makes it suitable for moves of almost every size, as well as inventories including heavy loads.

Qatar has 4 main ports, with Hamad being the most frequently used. It is one of the largest ports in the Middle East and is located conveniently close to the capital Doha. The other 3 main ports in Qatar are:

  • RasLaffan
  • Mesaieed
  • Al Ruwais

Transporting by sea is the slowest method, taking roughly 25-35 days to arrive. Domestic collection and loading will also add roughly a week to the journey. Customs checks in Qatar - which are quite rigorous - tend to take a minimum of 7 days.

Since cargo to Qatar usually goes through the busy Suez Canal, delays in shipping can be frequent.

Part-Load

When opting for part-load, you’ll be assigned a portion of a container on your chosen form of transport. The remaining space is then assigned for the possessions of other movers.

You pay less but may have to wait longer for a part-load container to arrive. Part-load has a typical transit window of 8-12 weeks.

As the cheapest form of international removal, part-load is a great choice for small-scale or budget moves. At the same time, the lower load space makes part-load unsuitable for larger-scale inventories or bulkier items like sofas or beds.

Air freight Qatar

Air Freight

Air freight is the speediest shipping option for Qatar removals. Cargo by plane usually takes between 1-3 days to arrive. Thanks to this, air freight is the most desired option for expats needing immediate access to their possessions.

Qatar only has 3 civil airports, whilst Hamad Airport is the only international airport in the country. Due to the limited space, there is a chance of delays for items being delivered to Qatar by air.

Though it is the most convenient mode of transport, air freight is also the priciest. What’s more, air freight is limited not only by the number of items being transported but also their weight. This makes air freight unsuited to heavier items such as furniture, pianos and vehicles.

Packing for air freight will need to be done by a removal professional, as it is a regulation of air travel. With that in mind, you’ll also need to add the cost of packing services to your moving budget.

Documentation Qatar

What Documentation Do I Need?

Being based in the Middle East, you’ll be expected to bring several different documents to confirm your validity for living in Qatar long-term. Though other items may be needed depending on your visa, essentials documents include:

  • A passport that’s valid for at least another 6 months
  • Medical insurance
  • Police clearance certificate (Certificate of Good Conduct)
  • An employment contract (if applicable)
  • The appropriate visa, residence and work permits

As it is outside the EU, Qatar has stricter requirements for importing goods. Before considering your move, you’ll need to provide proof of a residence visa with at least a year’s validity. You also may need to give a letter from your sponsor in Qatar, certifying your possessions aren’t for resale.

Visas and Permit

People visiting Qatar for tourism automatically qualify for a Qatar-Oman Joint Tourist Visa. This requires no application and is granted upon arrival. The joint tourist visa remains valid for 30 days - with the option of extending it for a further 30 days at a price.

Stays longer than 30 days will require a business visa, which will need to be applied for and obtained before entering the country. A business visa application typically takes around 15 days to process. An exit visa will also have to be granted before you leave the country once you’ve entered.
