Volume of Your Move

Removal companies provide quotes based on the cubic footage of items that need moving. Although this amount varies between companies, you can expect to pay around £0.75-£1 per cubic foot.

As with all house removals, your moving company will provide a free home survey to work out the volume of your belongings that will need moving. The overall volume of your belongings determines the size of vehicle required, the time it will take for staff to pack and load, and the packing materials needed.

The average UK removal costs are as follows:

  • 1 Bedroom (400 cubic feet) House or Flat costs around £352.
  • 2 Bedroom (625 cubic feet) House or Flat costs around £550.
  • 3 Bedroom (875 cubic feet) House or Flat costs around £770.
  • 4 Bedroom (1250 cubic feet) House or Flat costs around £1100.
  • 5 Bedroom (1750 cubic feet) House or Flat costs around £1500.

Distance Travelled

A removal company will charge less for relocating in the local area than they would do for moving across the country or overseas. The further distance you move, the more you will pay.

A recent survey of our partner network showed that some UK removal companies charge an hourly rate, while others break down costs on a mile by mile basis.

One partnered removal company in our network charges £25 per hour of travelling plus £0.50 per mile covered. Another removal company simply charges £1 for each mile that is covered during your move.

Prices based on vehicle moving at an average speed of 60 mph. These costs are averages and may differ to prices provided by our partners.

Ease of Access

Some removal companies may charge extra if they have difficulty gaining access to your property. This cost varies significantly between removal companies and the specifics of your move.

Some removal firms may add extra to their hourly rate while others may simply add a fixed fee on top of your other moving costs.

Ease of access can relate to several scenarios during your move. If you live in a top floor flat without a lift, your removers will have extra difficulty loading their vehicle. If you live down a narrow lane or your street has restricted parking, your removal company will assess how close they can get to your property.

Depending on the type of vehicle they are using, it may be difficult to park or manoeuvre down a narrow lane, for example.

Your removal company will advise you on ease of access as part of your home survey if you are unsure.

Special Care Items

These are items that require extra protection, such as fine art or antiques, or items that need moving with specialist equipment.

The removal company may have to use more packing material or take more time packing and moving these items. The cost of handling special care items will often be based on the value of the item or the cost of hiring their specialist equipment.

Transporting special care items may require a specialist removal company to ensure nothing is damaged or lost during your move. This will generally cost extra, but will give you peace of mind that your belongings have been safely delivered to your new property.

All of the partnered removal companies in our network are insured to pack and move your belongings, giving you further assurance that your belongings are in safe hands.
